My ruckus has 7000 miles on it and no problems. I talked a motorcycle mechanic who said there is no needed preventative maintenance if I have no problems. Is this accurate?. I change th oil every once in a while (4 times since 0 miles) and put in a new air filter at 5k....but thats it. My top speed is 32mph. It goes against my thought of "maintenance prevents problems and repairs". am I being paranoid?
Thanks

Well, I would change my oil more often than you. I do it every 600 miles or so.
I'd also say check your tire pressure. Obviously, if you're only runnin' 32, you aren't running at the top of your game. I'm sure tomorrow, others with chime in.

32mph isn't that great...37mph is about normal. It's likely your Ruck needs a tune up including tire PSI, valve shimming maybe a new plug and in a few thousand more miles you may want to give it a new drive belt, roller weights and fresh gear oil.

Am I the only one who is shocked and shaken by this!!??!? I'd have to say your friend is a moron, and I can't believe your bike even does 32!!! At 7k you should have had almost a dozen oil changes, a few air filters, 2-3 fuel filters, 2-3 belts, rollers, plugs, etc. etc.... I've seen a Ruckus with 4k on it that had nothing done and it was about 50 miles away from blowing up. It's not a lawn mower! Take care of your bike and it'll run a lot better. Preventative maintainence is cheap, and it's not worth over looking. There is a difference between running, and running reliable, and running well! I'd have to think that your bike is in the running category. Sorry if I come off a little harsh, I'm just shocked!

I dunno about 2-3 belts and fuel filters....Honda knows that some people aren't going to do any mainteance so the make the stock rollers and belt etc. as long lasting as they can. Aftermarket rollers need to be changed a lot more often.

The Ruckus I got with 4k on it needed a belt and rollers pretty bad. The belt was 16.8 and the rollers were very worn.
2-3 is a bit much, how about on the second set. And I change my FF every season, no use losing performance when gas has been sitting in a $10 part. I guess I just see it differently because to replace ALL of the wearable maintainence parts on a Ruckus is MAYBE $120 in parts...

When i read statement like this, i really get scare about some techs out there " I talked a motorcycle mechanic who said there is no needed preventative maintenance if I have no problems. Is this accurate?." That is really bad advice, even though i am not as good as IHAR i think his recommendations are very good, changing the gas filter every year is a good advice as it prevents carb problems, the plugs last a long time if the batt is on good condition (i am on my second one with 7k miles) And my advice is "DO THE MAINTENANCE ON YOUR SCOOTER" change the oil every 600 miles or 1000 kms, replace your fuel filter every year, check the drive belt and roller weight every two years (replace them if they look questionable) check the tire pressure every month, and most important LOVE THE SCOOTER AND GO RIDE IT

Thanks guys! some good advice, however I think changing your oil every 600 miles is a waste of money. Modern Oil lasts longer than that even in the harshest conditions. As far as being on my third drive belt I don't want to constantly be replacing parts that are not worn out. Thats like saying get new tires every 2000miles regardless of condition. But I also don't want to have a useless scoot. So Ive ordered Spark plug, fuel filter, air filter, drive belt, and am going to shim the valve gaps and change the oil. We will see how it goes. Anything else I am missing?....(ps my tire pressure was at 25 so thats not why I'm slow)

Changing the oil on the ruckus at 600 miles is a good idea as it tends to get contaminated with gas vapors easily, and as far as i know, that is not a good thing with any kind of oil, actually it creates a problem with the main bearings on the crankshaft, it has gotten better on the new generation of engines with the computer controled PCV system but still 600 miles oil changes are a good maintenace idea

Rollers Replaced (D shaped) Belt Replaced (kinda falling apart) Fuel Filter replaced. Air filter replaced (3rd since new) Oil screen Replaced (old one not dirty...but changed) Oil Replaced(and drain plug washer replaced) Spark plug replaced.
Back to the stock speed 38-40mph. Acceleration is not as fast but Ill take the top end for now. Measured my gaps and need to go get shims later.
Thanks for your help guys.
Let this be a lesson to you non believers (i was one) If your scooter is slow... Maintenance Maintenance Maintenance !
Im sad I wasted all that time on the road going 30-32 mph. but now im back to like new performance at 7300miles and did it all myself (parts 80$) with the help of this site! Thanks ALL...Im pumped.

viva la ruckus and no viva la people that don't care about what serves them. that's shocking and scary. you should be suspended from riding a ruck for the kind of treatment you give to your scooter. not cool.
