Homestar: As a supplement to my PM reply, notice the fine pics by Chantio on page 1 of this thread regarding filing the lip down. I also found my post which I think says your washer inner diameter needs to be greater than 12mm and less than 24mm for the outer diamter. I wasn't 100% sure at the time I wrote that though and wierd decimal places you can see in my original post have me concerned I am mistaken.

I went to my somewhat local Ace hardware today and picked up a couple of 14mm washers. The outside diameter is 28mm. I am waiting for some time off from work to put my ruck back together, I filed down the spacer and lip. I hope to have it get me to a speed so I can drive it to work, about 50 miles round trip.

Maybe more people would find this thread via the search function if the title was spelt correctly

Jeez, Dan, maybe it'd be spelled right if someone used their mod powers to correct the spelling in the thread name. Oh, wait, someone awesome did.

Nice work....I guess I can't really diss you for being a lazy mod if I haven't even corrected this and I've known about it for years.

Muy Bueno!
I have a spaced that was machined down to 35.00mm that is just sitting around. I'll use it some day. Honestly the stock spacer at 36.ish works fine, I've marked the variator and it never gets all the way to the top, but this isn't a bad thing, you're using more if the belt the lower is is. And for me it's not about top speed, sure a number is nice, but useable power and a decent range is more important.

so, i followed closely chanito's how-to on shaving spacer while performing such operation today. however, i don't have vernier calipers like chanito does , nor do i have a metric ruler. all i have is carpenter's roulette. so i calculated approximate dimensions in inches and went happy with a new file. to measure everything, i used a screw driver, fingernail and roulette, which is extremely inaccurate and ghetto . an hour later, i went on a test ride. the results of (as the test showed) overshaved spacer/drive face are these: 1. because the variator is coser to the drive face now all the time, i was idling at a higher gear, so the clutch was almost always engaging. when taking off at street light, engine, almost stalling and sounding like a mini-harley (chop-chop-chop), sloooowly pulled to enough rpms to start accelerating. i used to be able to outrun cars for the first 10 seconds after take-off, now they outrun me always . well, now i will have to order a new drive face. for now, i installed a washer between drive face and spacer, but it was too narrow so i had to widen the hole using a small round file (which didn't come out even at all: now i have vibrations throughout the whole rpm range) .

This is one of the things that remains a mystery to me, some mods a lot of people have done with great results are duds to me, like the aftermarket variator and CDI, both were such a disappointment to me, and so far one of the most gratifying was the variator shaving, actually i am still using the stock shaved variator, and have a bunch of stock length spacers left over from the engines i bought on EBAY for the big bore project

chanito, i got your package in mail today! thanks, installed it right away. it's been almost two weeks since i shaved the spacer and drive face. turns out, i shaved the drive face wrong! my filing went kind of sideways, and now the original drive face has the belt wear mark that's off center! and i was wondering about that vibration at 35+ mph... but now i am almost back to stock (spacer is still shaved a little bit). i'll post pics of the messed-up face drive later...

Hey guys..very helpful thread to read..have one question though..can I shorten the spacer to 35.5 and leave the nose alone..would that add a little more top end without sacrificing too much acceleration??
many thanks! ;D

well did my spacer tonight..got to 39 mp\h up from my best of 35...I shortened the spacer to 35.25 to try and minimize accel. loss..I didn't notice much if any loss in accel..pretty happy with the results..also my variator was chocked full of belt dust (i think) ..there is a pretty big groove in the faces of the variator where the belt rides..also my weights were flat is spots..i'll be fixing this shortly with a new variator, but for now..it is a pretty good mod for free...

pounder, dude, you are obviously overdue for the traditional "back-to-speed" variator overhaul:
- new rollers (the best choice, imho - met's stock honda 6g ones, about $10-11 from a dealer for a set of 6)
- new belt (the best choice, again, imho - the stock one)
- cleaning all that belt dust (by the way, if you have A LOT of it, that means, your belt was worn down a lot)
- check clutch shoes
you mentioned you want to buy a new variator; you might not need that. try installing new belt and rollers first, and if you're not happy with results, only then buy an aftermarket one.
i understand you said the variator's face is worn where the belt usually rides, but after you install the new, thicker belt, and new, thicker rollers, the belt will ride much higher and will not be affected by the damaged variator face that much.

thanks varroa..I just bought the ruck last week and it's pretty obvious the dealer hasn't done anything with the variator belt etc..the belt looks pretty good though..there is alot of dust, but the belt almost looks new..maybe they replaced the belt but didn't clean out the dust..is there specs on the belts? like a measurement that I can check for to see if it needs to be replaced?
many thanks..
edit: found the 17mm wrench trick..i'll check it out..

are you saying, you just bought the ruck used? how many miles you got on the odometer?

yeah used..there's 3300 km's on it (so 1900 miles or so) ..1 year waranty from an authorized dealer..it's in good shape minuse the variator..and even then it's not that bad..just flat spot in the weights and variator face with a groove in it..

I bought a 2009 ruckus that already had a kn variator with 6g installed
does the kn have it own spacer or does it use the stock one?
How much will I benifit from a shortened spacer and how would I go about modifying it?
