Synthetic or ground juice? Everyone has their justification for what they think is best - I want to get the best. Intervals?! A wise person here has said cut what-ver they recommend in half - make sense for all of you pucker Ruckers??

In racing apps Mobil 1 is the best, Kendall is second...Says me You can use Harley Mobil 1 because the Ruckus has no tranny. If you go syn make sure to break in the motor real good. The wear stops when you make the switch.

Motul makes a scooter specific 10W40.
I think I may try to get some.

I use the Honda GN4 4-stroke motorcycle oil that Honda suggests in the manual. Is there something better or is this kind good enough?

Wear doesn't stop when you switch to synthetic, it just slows way down. You can break in your scoot on synthetic if you want (not recommended), just expect it to take a long time. Your change intervals are longer on synthetic too. My 2 pence says to go Walmart, Canadian Tire, wherever and buy a big gallon jug of mobile1 after your satisfied that your scoot is broken in properly. Your oil-change rate will depend on what kind of riding that you do. If your putting on a hundred miles a day, you can extend the change longer than if you only go for really short trips. Flame On!

I change oil every 800 miles. My aftermarket bike mechanic/guru says at that frequent rate, any 10-40 weight (non-conserve rating by direction of the factory for the warranty)is fine. I have a friend who worked at an oil lab with an electron microscope. They found the polymers (the lubricating part of the oil)get sheared on a molecular level after 800 miles; but it looks clean to the eye. The price of an oil change is cheap considering it takes only 2 quarts and no filter (just a screen to clean). I, keep receipts for the oil and any maintenance in a big envelope with the original paperwork for the scooter.

:)Keeping receipts is a good idea, it is great at the time to sell the scooter or trade it in, but since i do my own maintenance i have no receipts

I heard about breakdown on the molecular level too. I agree that if you are changing you oil frequently then you don't really benefit by going synthetic because synthetic really just lasts longer from what I've heard and you don't need that if you change it all the time.

Well abe likely won't answer you because he hasn't been on here since April. I'd say that once you've gone 1000kms you're for sure done. I'd side on the long side. Since you just changed it at 300 you may as well make your next one at 1000 and switch then.

:)I should put this under my faq thread, but i will do it later, 600 miles should be a good enought time for a proper break-in, but wait untill 1200 to be safe, i recommend changing the oil every 600 miles as our engines rev very high most of the time, and at least with the old (03-05) pcv system we had some blow-by, so the oil degrade quicker.

And keep in mind, 1000 km is about 620 miles, I thinks.

The Honda stuff is decent but overpriced. A cheap synthetic is a good choice because with a oil change every 1000kms/600 miles pretty much any oil will hold up. If you want the best go Mobil 1 or there's something new out now that's still rare....I think it's made by the mobil 1 guys but it's even better but about 25% more expensive....even mobil 1 is overkill though (but I use it).

Motorcycle oil isn't any better than modern day oils.
Don't make me hunt down my sources.

And by sources, I mean a web page where they did a comparison.

Likely the reason they said it was better to use is that a lot of motorcycles have a 'wet clutch' which just mean the clutch is lubricated by the engine oil and thus the oil needs special properties to perform this additional task. Our engines aren't like this so any car oil is fine. If motorcycle was actually better for reasons other than this than car oil manufacturers would have quickly stolen the secret.
