Hey, I'm new to the forum. Just picked up a 2009 Ruckus new from a local Honda dealer. I'm ready to mod! I'm 6-2, 230 lbs. I want to add a bigger, more comfy seat with room for a passenger. I'd also like to add foot pegs and possibly upgrade the rear shock for a more comfortable ride. put 70 miles on it this weekend and am trying to make it my daily driver to work (6 mi each way). I appreciate any tips you can provide.

Well if you want to have a rider your gonna need to beef that suspension for sure. best shock availalbe the Doppler mx-performance.com/id82.html Have it adjusted for your combined weight but expect a stiff ride alone. Also the KN Variator from Battlescooter. Its geared lower so you can keep the revs up for the extra weight. Do a search here for buddy seat ideas for your rider. Larger seats to buy are not common your gonna have to make something most likely

The rider thing isn't too big of a deal. Just to have in case I need to give my girl a ride back from the beach. I saw a post about an AERO 80 shock? Supposedly cheaper and does a good job. The Doppler looks pretty good too but a little pricier.
Thanks for the info.

brixton, i bought a 2009 ruckus in april and i have 550 miles on it now. i outweigh you by about 30# and yes, the NH80/CH80 shock gave me a LOT of improvement in ride quality. i'm trying to figure out if i can make a collar to preload the spring even more, but that's for another topic.
my typical top speed is 35mph, but i regularly peg the needle given a good tail wind and a slight grade.

Thanks for the feedback. I got jammed up with a few things and am hoping to put the seat relocator and shock on next week. I think the pegs will be next. I put the Chanito windshield on and am up to 200 miles on my '09, I've been pleased lately, been hitting 35 easy and right around 40 if the conditions are right.

Im another fellow large ruck rider....Foot pegs are a must! I got BMX pegs from my local bike show and bought some washers and nuts from Home Depot. The foot pegs literally gave me 6 more inches of room from my knees to handle bars.

I'm a big rider too. Big around. I'm 5'9" and 225lbs. Power wise, the scooter is awesome. Oddly, after reading these, I seem to notice my front shock seems to be rougher than my rear. For example, when I hit something whether it be the change in pavement as I turn into a 7-Eleven at 25mph, the front seems to take the hit much harder than the bag. I love the light weight of the scooter so I can jump it over curbs and stuff. I haven an 09 that I bought used with 1300 miles on it. Perhaps the previous owner did some work. I don't think so though.

I think the reason the scooter acts like this is because the rear shock is already fully compressed with our big asses sitting on top of it. While the front does compress some when we are riding, it's not quite as bad as the rear! Please correct me if I am wrong!

Hey everyone. I know this is a late response but, hopefully I can save you guys some money. I am 6' 0" and 215 lbs. The best mods I got so far is......Polini Speed variator kit (it has the largest diameter which is perfect for larger riders), Dr. Pulley 6 gram slider weights and Battlescooter Clutch Springs. The torque spring was a waste in $$ (put the stock one back on). Topeak Modula Cage Waterbottle Cage (amazon.com (great purchase)).
This weekend I am adding the 3 K&N filters + jetting and adding the Kitaco rear shock. I will post average & top speed when I am done.

KN variator for the win! Jody, a vendor on TotalRuckus.com, sells a double seat. It's 120$ shipped I believe.

Hi there ...
I know this post is rather old, but does the KN variator still holds to be best for heavy riders? I am 225 and like brixton and would like higher speeds going up hill and am more than happy with 35-40 MPH on flat.
And for the life of me ... I cannot find a place that sells "KN Variator" can anybody help me please?
Thanks in advanced ...

I would go for the polini as it is easier to find.

I would go for the polini as it is easier to find. Hi Chanito, Thanks for the suggestion ... Isn't it true that to get good performance from polini I would have to change the belt to a polini belt as well?

Those are news to me, the "Polini" is a good quality piece with longer ramps, so you can tune the weights to get some extra acceleration and if you tune it right a couple of extra miles per hour at the end of a long straight. The advantage of stronger belts is suppose to be the non stretch factor. but stretching of the stock belt was never a factor to me

I've just picked up a 2012 ruckus and am 6'6" 240-ish.
Anyone over 6' should look into the NCY seat relocator brackets; it made a night and day difference in the comfort and fit of this thing for me!
after in get a peg setup installed; I'll be cruising in complete comfort!
I'm wanting to look into the variators as well, and definitely have some research to do there. replacement rear shock will also need to be addressed and researched.
