Hey all. I'm the market for a new Ruckus. In Massachusetts, anything under 50cc is considered a moped, which has its disadvantages. You're not allowed to drive over 25, and you can't drive at night.
Obviously the top speed of the Ruckus is over 25, but I was wondering if anyone gets hassled by cops. The Ruckus doesn't look like a "typical" scooter, so I think that might help. Moreso for the night driving, I'd be using this for work, and I work until midnight. I live on Cape Cod, and I'd be driving down Route 28 from Hyannis to Harwich, 5 days/nights a week. I'm ready to pull the trigger on this, but not if I can't drive at night. Thanks for any help!

Wow! What strange laws - the Ruckus is great with its twin headlights at night. Why its almost like driving a car Far be it from me to recommend anything illegal, but if the local cops are a little relaxed about these things, then going faster might make you seem less like a moped - and probably make you less of a slow moving target. But you don't want to hear a siren and see a big policeman going either - unless you feel like doing a at him.

My work schedule would be pretty regular, I'd be driving home a little after midnight 5 days a week on the same road, I just want to make sure the cops wouldn't look for me every day. I thought about going to the police stations along the way and asking them, maybe mentioning something about using a scooter to "save the environment" or something.
I just want to get the thing and drive it to save gas money, and these silly laws are getting in the way. Massachusetts sucks. Any residents own a Ruckus?

OK, in Mass you would need to certify to the DMV that it is a "moped" - hit this link for the Mass DMV form: www.mass.gov/rmv/forms/20017.pdf Then you get a sticker which would let you ride. Problem is, not only do you have to keep your speed below 25 mph, you have to certify that the Ruckus is not "capable" of more than 30 mph. But as we all know, it can easily go over 30 mph. DMV might know this already. In that case, you have to register it as a motorcycle and get your MC license. Good news, I don't see where it says you can't drive after dark. So, I think you have a problem. You'd be better off buying a real moped or finding a used Metropolitan II (speed restricted). I think I saw a used one on craigslist in the Boston area. By the way, there are a couple of guys in Boston on the TotalRuckus.com site. You can ask them what they ended up doing.

I got stopped by a Massachusetts State Trooper on my Ruckus. He wanted to know where my plate was because it was a motorcycle. I had to explain to him it was a scooter and I didn't need a plate. After playing 20 questions he asked the engine size (49cc) and he let me go . I paid the same to register it as a motorcycle but the state doesn't give me a license plate just a little sticker. I take it to work and ride home at night. There's no restriction about night riding. As far as going no faster that 25, I'd say thats not a safe . I'd rather keep up with the traffic or someone will flick a booger at me. After all this is Massachusetts and we all know how the drivers are. I still haven't seen any other Ruckus riders south of Boston in the Hingham , Weymouth area.

The ruckus just requires a limited use vehicle which you would have a plate and you should be able to ride when ever you want and all u need is a permit and or your drivers license no motorcycle license is required for the ruckus and I'm in the Woburn area and I go to Cambridge and Boston a lot can't wait for that spring weather

I registered mine as a "motorized bicycle" and received a small moped sticker, never been questioned by the authorities.. I needed to go this route because I built my ruckus, and purchased my frame from Honda (without a vin) during the time when you didn't need to register as an LUV. My sticker is good till December, so hopefully I don't get bopped! I got my sticker from the Plymouth rmv by the way..

I live outside Boston and just bought a used Ruckus from Connecticut. Expect I need to bring my title to registry and see what they give me when I ask to register my 49cc scooter. I work in same building as registry downtown (Haymarket) and expect to commute to work down Storrow Drive (40mph limit), guessing I'll def need a plate
Will also need to explore options to boost my speed/performance a bit to maintain 40mph...
