The mesh filter is not suposse to get the fresh engine shavings, they are suposse to just lie down at the bottom of the oil pan, but if they ever get air borne (oil borne actually) they are too small for that mesh to catch them S that is why is a good idea to do a 100 mile oil change

Tipping the bike to get extra oil out is good, but after you do that try adding another 1-2 oz of clean oil and let it "wash" out and remaining sludge or particles and then tip it again to get it all out before adding your .6 or .7 depending on your sitchuation

What the hell do you use to get the screen plug out? The exhaust pipe is in the way and i can't get my ratchet or torque wrench in there.

They sell, torque adaptors, which are a smal wrench with a square hole so you can fit your torque wrench, they can with a foermula, so you have to get the new torque necesary to tighten your cover (is less than stock)

Hmm....a quart of oil is only like $3....anyways, likely, nothing bad would happen but you may have added some wear to your engine/bearings and just shorten the life a bit. Just take good care of it from now on and you should be fine. 1100 miles isn't that long.

what could happen if you went like 1100miles for your first oil change???....i didnt have ne money so i put it off till i got paid.....witch was today..... A little purple-black maintenance gremlin comes in and steals your coolant, oil, and all other fluids, and makes your bike explode. While you're riding it. I'm just kidding! I'm in a similar boat... I have to do this all myself too, on a disability budget. I'm also in college, this is a used bike (and my first!), it came with over a hundred miles on it, both dealer and the Harley shop (two separate people) said to wait till 600 miles to change the oil and such, but it's been running unevenly and making weird whirring sounds on the road, sounding... asthmatic, like it's not getting enough air. Sometimes it's hard to start, and sometimes the power just isn't there... So, about the best oil-change cradle, since I'm not Mrs. Muscle... how would I go about making one...? Hang the front end up to the shed roof with straps, and stabilize the back end with the kick stand? :/ Also, I thought the oil screen was on the front of the whole shebang, the flat-looking screw-on piece, as taught by this tutorial here... planetruckus.com/get-oil-change/

I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents... I change my oil frequently for my new ruck that's currently being broken in. It might be overkill, but I did it after 5, 20, 30, and 50 miles, and then I'll do it at 100 miles and every 500 mile mark after that. The reason I'm doing this is 1) it's cheap, and 2) I read in the forum that the engine is full of metal shards and debris when you get it from the dealer. And lo and behold, it was. I'd rather have that junk completely out of there as soon as I can, rather than wait till the 600th mile. Peace of mind, if nothing else.

Thanks for the guide, it is quite helpful. I had a question about type of oil, eg. conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic engine oil. ive found all three types when searching for oil online and was hoping for some insight as to what type would be best overall
