How old is it? Is the oil level correct? Tires inflated? Do you live in high altitudes? More information would help.

:) After doing what Kamino said, if you still want more speed mod the stock variator or buy an aftermarket one, and if you still need more invest on a big bore piston kit :o

35mph isn't that bad for an older Ruckus. 2003-2005 Ruckus's only do about 37mph new so yours doing 35mph is likely just from being slightly out of tune. Check out what Kami said but you aren't gonna gain more than 1-2mph but tuning it up. Depending on your weight, you can modify the stock variator or buy an aftermarket one but if you're a big/heavy guy or you ride in hilly or windy conditions that may not be a great idea but your speed up hills can drop even more.

If you want to get into performance mods the Piston is the way to do it. The rest of the mods are just a drop in the bucket. My 2006 did 0-30mph stock in about 8.75 seconds and with an aftermarket variator and every performance mod except the piston I shaved off about a second to 7.75 seconds. Then I did the piston and I've recorded times as low as 5.6 seconds with 6-6.5 seconds being more average. It makes a way bigger difference than any other performance mod.

Back when I had a 2003 Ruckus I was doing 0-30mph in about 12-15 seconds and now I can do 0-40 mph in 12 seconds. Imagine being at 40mph faster than you get to 30mph now! It does help that I have a 2006 Ruckus as well. The bottom line is just don't spend a wack of money on mods like a CDI and the Cam when you can get way more bang with the piston.

Dan will the poston alone help or do you have to do everything ( intake, exhaust, etc) to shave a few seconds off? On average I can hit 45MPH on flat ground tucked out of the wind and I've only changed the variator thus far. Everything else has been cosmetic. What could I expect from a new poston?

Although I haven't done the piston with less than all the mods here's my guess as to how it would perform:

Stock = 60% of the possible gain
Intake = 80%
Intake + Cam = 90%
Intake + Cam + Exhaust = 95%
Intake + Cam + Exhaust + Ported = 100%

So as you can see, I think you'll get the majority of the gain with a stock Ruckus and the vast majority of the gain with just an intake mod which you can easily do to your stock airbox cover in 15 min so it's really worth it. You can save a lot of money by stopping there and not doing the cam and exhaust.

That's just describing how much of the potential power increase you're going to get. I don't mean with just a stock ruckus and an intake you'll increase your power by 80%, I mean you'll just get 80% of the potential piston increase which is 20-30% so with the intake you'll get about 15%-25% more power or about 1hp.

You still need to worry about how you're going to handle that extra power because you're gonna have noticably better acceleration but you'll likely run into the redline on the top end. Thankfully you have an aftermarket variator so you're redlining a few mph higher. You could just leave your Ruckus like that and enjoy better acceleration and the ability to cruise at 45mph without tucking (unless it's a windy day or something) but if you want to get the max out of it you should add a Metro rear axle (or the full conversion) for the ability to go a bit faster without redline worries.

Here's how I think an 06 Ruckus performs with different mod combo's. Speeds are listed as sittingup/tucking. Of course these speeds depend on how well your Ruckus is tuned, the rider weight/wind resistance, climate, weather etc.

Stock 2006 = 40mph/43mph
06 + Variator = 41mph/45mph
06 + Variator, Cam, Intake, Exhaust = 42mph/47mph
06 + Piston = 43/43 (redline limited)
06 + Piston + Variator = 43/47 (redline limited)
06 + Piston + Intake + Var. = 45/47 (redline limited)
06 + Piston + Int. + Var. + Cam = 47/47 (redline limited)
06 + Piston + Int. + Var. + Cam + Exhaust = 47/47 (redline limited)
06 + Piston + Int. + Var. + Cam + Ex, + Met gears = 48/54
06 + Piston + Int. + Var. + Met gears = 46/52

So basically, an 06 with the piston, intake and proper gearing is capable of high 40's sitting upright and over 50mph in a tuck. With the full load of mods on an 06 sitting upright speeds approach 50mph and you can easily best 50mph in a tuck (in nice conditions). For 2003-2005 Ruckus, take 3-4mph off these speeds but you do have the option of using a CDI instead of the Metro gears which in generally frown upon unless you're keeping things under 9K. If you do the piston and intake and use the CDI to cruise at 45+ mph without even a variator you're gonna be running around at 10,000 rpm all day which is a lot harder on your engine. You atleast need to the do the variator still so you're top end revs don't get crazy high.

Regarding accleration times, a 2006 does 0-30mph in just under 9 sec stock (with a 165lbs rider) and with just the piston & intake I think you'd drop that to about 7.5 secs and then with an aftermarket variator and lighter rollers you'd be in the 7 second range. It would take the cam and exhaust to get you below this. I've ran 0-30mph times as low as 5.6 sec with a perfectly tuned and fully warmed up engine but normal times are in the 6-7 sec range. Pre-2006 owners should add about 3 seconds to all these times and everyone should add an additional 1 second for every 20lbs you're over 165lbs.
